Tips for Attaching Your Embroidered Patch
Iron-on patches can sometimes be a little tricky to attach. Follow these steps for the best results and a strong, long-lasting bond.
You’ll need:
- A household iron
- A pressing cloth — a thin piece of cotton, muslin, a lightweight cotton towel, or an old T-shirt works well
- A firm, heat-safe surface or piece of cardboard covered with aluminium foil
Before you begin
Iron-on patches work best on sturdy fabrics such as cotton, denim and canvas. Do not iron patches onto waterproof materials, vinyl, or heat-sensitive fabrics. If you're attaching your patch to one of these materials, we recommend sewing it on instead.
For the best long-term durability, we recommend ironing AND sewing your patch in place.
How to Attach Your Patch
1. Set your iron to dry heat.
Turn off the steam setting.
2. Preheat your iron.
Use the cotton setting, or one or two settings lower if you're unsure how your fabric will react to heat.
3. Position your patch.
Place the patch adhesive-side down where you want it and cover it completely with your pressing cloth.
4. Use a firm backing.
Place the heat-safe backing underneath your garment, between the garment and the ironing board. This helps reflect heat back toward the patch and provides a firm surface for a better bond.
5. Press from the front.
Using the centre of the iron, press firmly straight down and hold for 25–40 seconds. Avoid moving the iron back and forth or in circles.
6. Press from the back.
If possible, turn the garment inside out and repeat the process from the reverse side for 30–45 seconds, using the pressing cloth to protect the fabric.
7. Let it cool completely.
Allow the patch and garment to cool before testing the bond.
8. Check the edges.
Once completely cool, gently test the edge of the patch with your fingernail. If it lifts, repeat the pressing process for another 10–20 seconds at a time.
9. Sew for extra durability.
For patches that will see lots of wear, washing or outdoor use, we recommend sewing around the edges once the patch has been securely ironed on.
A Few Important Tips
- Always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the patch.
- Avoid steam — you need dry heat to activate the adhesive.
- Don't iron directly over the embroidered surface without protection.
- Be careful not to scorch or burn your fabric.
- Some household irons may not reach a high enough temperature to properly activate the adhesive.
The goal is to heat the adhesive enough for it to bond with the fibres of the fabric without damaging either the patch or the garment.
Now you're ready to wear your patch and take it on your next adventure! 🏔️
